What was the Hindenberg disaster and how can we apply it to Chemistry?

the hindenburg disaster was the crash and explosion of the worlds first flying luxury hotel and can be applied to chemistry because it showed that when hydrogen which filled the hindenburg is mixed with oxygen and a spark the rection ignites and forms water.

Well done Kyle, you are the first to contribute to the blog... perhaps I should award you bonus marks. My concern with this incident is, why would engineers choose to use Hydrogen as a gas to lift the Hindenberg? Wouldn't there be a better element to use?

-> the engineers chose to use Hydorgen because hydrogen can lift
13.3 times its own weight and allows the gas to be released properly for landing also yes there could be a better element and it is helium. doing some research i discovered that people saw bright red and orange flames shooting from the back of the hindenberg But hydrogen burns blue when it can be seen at all. my concern is how do you know that hydrogen was the cause of this problem?

Nicely done Amal. I didn't know about the witnesses observations... I am curious about the colour of flames that shot out the back, is there a conspiracy theory behind this event?

Why do you think that Hydrogen has the ability to lift? and you are absolutely correct about the helium, it would have been a far better choice. Because Helium has a full valence shell it is very stable and would have made a safer choice.

how big of a difference does it make when hydrogen only has one valence electron to helium having eight and why does it matter if it was stable.

hey benji the reason is that hydrogens 1 valence electron can join with any other substance where helium can't join with any.
does that answer your question?
